2008 - NEW PLANS
We weren't the only
group complaining that no reunions were being allowed on
Saturday night of Wolfstock
Weekend and instead Advancement was trying to force
everyone to go to some little 2 hour dinner for $35 on Friday night
and have to get a hotel
room if they wanted to stay for the main events on Saturday. Sounds
like a turf war between
Advancement and Athletics. So while it is too late for a big Polity/USG 50th
Anniversary Reunion,
or for a big
Statesman 50th Anniversary Reunion, and the 1980's
SAB/EOB Reunion has gone
off-
campus, at
least the Alumni Association got the
University Cafe
open until 11 pm! Maybe that's
because even if Advancement would not let Alumni Association staff
help with Saturday
reunions, the Alumni Association President just happens to be going
to the Black and
Latino Alumni Reunion on Saturday night in the University Cafe! We
figure if we
complain enough, next
year Advancement might finally
get it right, or better
yet the University will get rid of the fool making these decisions. Now if
there was just some way to
get them to tell ALL alumni what
individual reunions are trying to
happen
rather than simply
a few alumni telling each other and using Facebook...
but hey...
that would make sense!

Polity Reunion 2008
It's also Statesman's 50th Anniversary and the Alumni Association
would not help them with a Saturday reunion so they cancelled theirs
completely, though now the Alumni Association is claiming they are
having one on Friday - but the original organizers aren't even
planning on going because they don't live nearby.
We asked them to join us and we would make it a Polity / Statesman
Reunion since in the old days, Polity funded Statesman completely,
but there is not a big chance of it happening
because they are really angry at
Admin for messing everything up.

SAB / EOB from the 1980's was also trying to have a reunion on
Saturday night but not getting any help and finally arranged
something off-campus in Port Jeff. Unfortunately it was originally
going to be $75 a head (kids free) so we opted to pull
something together on our own. Now theirs is down to $20 from 6 - 9
and free except for drinks from 9pm - 4am.

Statesman Alums:
There's going to be a Statesman reunion this
fall - during October’s Homecoming Weekend - but its not the big
50th anniversary event Ned Steele, David Joachim & I had hoped for,
and tried to plan for.
The
University, which was being very cooperative in early spring,
offering us space and funds, sent out a "Save the Date" email in
late May, but we have no idea as to how many people it went out to,
or to whom. (For instance, I didn't get one - how's that
possible?).
The University did
develop last year, at our suggestion and with our prodding, a list
of some 900 people who worked on Statesman the past 50 years, but
refused to share it with us (citing privacy rules), and then failed
to use the list to mail any announcement of reunion plans.
Part of the problem is that the
person we'd been dealing with at the U. left, and the person who
took her place seems to be little informed about our efforts. For
instance, we had specifically asked for a Statesman Reunion Dinner
(buffet style) at the Stony Brook Union for Saturday night, the
18th. We've now been told we're included in a general "Reunion
Reception" Friday night at the Wang Center, along with other
"classes, clubs, dorms, regions and sports." How many people who
don't live locally will be able to make it to that?
So
Homecoming Weekend, October 17-18, 2008, there very well may be
something billed as a Statesman reunion, but at this late
date, don't expect much attendance.
