You do not need a login or password to add an event.
Everyone is a guest. We have administrative control and can override
any submissions that are not appropriate. In almost 10 years, we've
never had any that were bad, just some for good events but which
weren't Asian American oriented.
These directions seem long and complicated but they are not - just
read through it and you'll understand why it needs to be long - and
after you add your first event, you'll realize how easy it all is.
Go to Calendar
http://aasquared.org/calendar/calendar.pl
A. Click on Add Events. The Add Event
form pops up.
1)
Fill in the Title like this:
a) TYPE IT ALL IN CAPS.
It looks clearer and bolder that way.
b) Do NOT bold the
letters. It does not come out bold on the calendar, only on the
calendar editing list - and on the list long titles in bold mess up
spacing.
c) Mandatory for
localized events - start entry with two or three letters of where
the event is in general so that someone in NYC who can't get to SBU
knows not to bother looking, e.g., NYC : , NYU : , BKLYN : , SBU : ,
etc.
d) Use space colon space
(i.e., : ) between each new part of the title if there is room. It
looks cleaner.
e) Put more specific info
of where the event will be in macro terms, e.g., SAC, but not SAC
Ballroom A. There is limited space.
e) End the entry with a
little html code for a line break <br> - but do not
put br in bold. If we did not put it in bold here on this page you
would not see the < br >, there would just be a line break. That
will give a space between each event on the calendar face page.
Example: SBU : WANG : CHARLES WANG'S
BIRTHDAY PARTY<BR>
2) Fill in the Description
like this:
a) Everything you want people to know but
if you have a website they can go to, just put in the basic info.
b) Basic info: what, where (address or
building and room), when (date and time), contact info if important,
directions if important.
c) Web address - if you put in http://and
then the url, it will automatically link.
d) Again, use the <br> (but not
bold) of <br > (but without the space) to create line breaks so that
it it not one long paragraph. Two in a row creates a blank space
between paragraphs.
Example:
<BR >Recycling & Reincarnation<BR

An International Mixed Media Art
Exhibition<BR ><BR >
Stony Brook University and East China
Normal University explore recycling and life through art<BR ><BR >
From Oct. 4 through Nov. 6 at the Charles
B. Wang Asian American Center, Stony Brook University will showcase
Recycling & Reincarnation: Exhibition of Public Art, Image
Communication and Industrial Design, featuring the work of artists
affiliated with East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai,
People’s Republic of China. <BR ><BR >
The exhibition focuses on the exploration
of the connections between recycling as a practice, whether
environmental or industrial, and the cyclicality of life, spirit and
history. One of the pieces is a collaborative project between the
artists and faculty of Stony Brook University’s Art Department and
ECNU. It will complement an artistic exchange, in which Stony Brook
University welcomes an ECNU delegation of students, faculty and
administration, including University President Yu Lizhong. <BR ><BR
>
It will be open weekdays from 8:00 am to
8:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on weekends. <BR ><BR >
<b >FREE and open to the public.</br
> <BR ><BR >
http://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/wang/programs/exhibitions.html
Note: To make inserting the html
code easier,
copy the <br> and
then just paste it in wherever you need to. A single <br> to
start a paragraph, or <br><br> to make a new paragraph
and skip a line. Or rather than <br>, insert <p> at
the end of a sentence if you want to start a new paragraph and skip
a line.
Insert <b> before
a word or phrase and </br> after to make it BOLD. Do
NOT do your whole listing in BOLD or ALL CAPS - it is actually
harder to read.
3) Fill in the Start Time like this:
Make the start time and
the end time the same. It just looks nicer. Remember that with lots
of listings, you want impact with less unnecessary info on the
calendar face page. For most events, someone can't (or shouldn't)
walk in during the middle anyway.
If the event will go on
for a many hours and people can arrive at any time, check off All
Day.
4) Fill in the Date like
this - there is no one way because you have lots of options so play
around - single day events are easy but you can also fill out one
form that will do, for example, every Wed for the next year, or like
a gallery exhibit that just includes the 5 or 6 days the gallery is
open.
a) Individual Date can be 11/11/11
or many days that are not consecutive like
11/11/11,11/12/11,11/18/11,11/19/11
b) Date Range will put something on the
calendar EVERY single day in the range. So if, for example, it is an
art exhibit that is closed on Mondays, then click on Recurring
Schedule and use that form instead.
c) Recurring Schedule has lots of
options - play with them to get what you want.
5) Click SAVE - You're done!
B. Click on Edit Events. The Edit Event
form pops up.
Click on the event you want to edit and do any of the above to make
changes.
Note, only events that have been put on the calendar by a guest show
up to be edited. Events put on by the administrator or someone with
a password can only be edited by those people.
5) Passwords Want your own password to
have total control over your events?
Email aaezine @ yahoo.com.
We decide your login and password unless you tell us what you want.
6) Problems? It's
rare but occasionally someone does have a snafu or odd request.
Email aaezine @ yahoo.com
7)
Using html code. You can make your
entry in color and even have photos. But we're not teaching html
code to everyone so if you don't know it, find an online tutorial.
Here's an example of an html entry:
http://aasquared.org/calendar/calendar.pl?month=11&year=2010&view=Event&event_id=3159
8) Link Directly to
Calendar
On your homepage or wherever you list events on your website you can
link directly to the calendar or to the calendar listing of your
event. Do not link to this page or the
Calendar index page. Those are for organizations. Do not add an
extra layer.
The calendar url is
http://aasquared.org/calendar/calendar.pl
9) What
Can Be Listed?
We Will Remove Anything That Should NOT Be Here
If it is an event that is
in some way geared to the Asian & Asian American community it
belongs here.
That can range from specific ethnic events - like monthly meetings
of an organization, to events that are
open to the general public (even though they may not be in English),
to events that are about Asia or
Asian America that are meant for anyone to go to. Events that do not
fit that criteria will not be
included.
Please do not list casting calls or advertising for any
retail business. We will remove them.
SPECIAL NOTE ON CLASSES: Only list first class, do not put them on
the recurring
schedule unless people can come to any class without having started
at the beginning.
10)
Search
for Any or All Events
There is a search feature
for all events. Make sure, however, to put in a date
so that you are only looking at the current year, e.g., "China
Institute", 2004.
